The Municipality of Loreto:
Located on central Baja California Sur; within the 26' 33' 11" and 25'12' 15" latitude North and 111º,"22' and 11 0° 55" 5' Longitude, west of the prime meridian, at Greenwich. Its Municipal seat is the city of Loreto located 221 miles North of La Paz, the State Capital.
The municipality of Loreto has an area of 1,065,267 Acres, which represents 5.85 percent of the State's total area. It has 139 miles of littoral, 5 islands and several isles and islets.
The Loreto Region
"Loreto is located on the Sea of Cortez in the southern half of Baja California. The territory of the municipality of Loreto is 4,311 km2 with approximately 270 kilometers of coastline, including the
offshore islands. The region of Loreto houses approximately 15,000 people, of which over 80%live in the town of Loreto. The rest of the population lives in 130 small ranching settlements and another 21 fishing and cattle breeding communities (Ivanova and Cota, 2005)." (See: Loreto Report.)
To the North, it borders with the municipality of Mulege, at Punta de San lldefonso, known also as Punta Pulpito, located on the Southern tip of San Nicolas Bay. To the South, lies the municipality of Comondu, at El Cochi Inlet on the Gulf of California. To the East, borders 118 littoral miles. To the West, with the municipality of Comondu, at the crossing of the Trans-peninsular Highway and the Cadeje stream, where a line broken in seven sections begins, ending at the Southeastern littoral of the Gulf of California, at El Cochi inlet.
In turn, the State of Baja California Sur, which is found on theNorthwestern portion of México, has a total territorial area of 18,203,440 Acres, which represents 51.2 percent of the total peninsular area and 3.7 percent of the Mexican territory.

To the North, Baja California Sur borders with parallel 28, the borderline with the State of Baja California; to the South, Cabo San Lucas, the tip of the peninsula, lies adjacent to the mixed waters of the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California.
The peninsula's length is 466 miles with an average width of 62 miles: the maximum lies at the Vizcaino region with 124 miles, and the minimum, 26 miles, lies at 34 miles North of La Paz. By plane, Loreto is just 2 hours Southwest of the United States.
Baja California Sur Within the frame of domestic tourism policy, Loreto's development is priority. The Mexican government through FONATUR, has allocated large investments to the area, providing an international airport, a golf course, a marina, and urban and hotel infrastructure.
Loreto is at the heart of the Sea of Cortes and owns the Bahia de Loreto National Marine Park; consequently, it is the natural center of the Sea of Cortes Project. The community of Villa Julieta is being developed now by Costa Loreto in this area of Baja. Thus, Loreto is today the center of the future best developments for the nautical tourist industry, worldwide.
The municipality 2000 census showed a total of 8,607
inhabitants older than 12 years of age; 4,663 of those
constitute the Economically Active Population.

Localities:
The municipality of Loreto has 121 localities. The main are: Loreto, which is also the municipal seat, has 8,299 inhabitants; Puerto Agua Verde has 165 inhabitants, San Javier has 162 inhabitants, Luigi has 144 inhabitants, and Ensenada Blanca has 121 inhabitants, Other important localities are San Juan Londo, Colonia Zaragoza, Paso Santa Cruz, El Peloteado, Tembabiche and San Nicolas.
Population:
The municipality has an area of 1,205,375 Acres, and, on 2000, a population of 1 1,812 inhabitants. Between 1995 and 2000 the population growth rate was 3.41 percent, therefore, it is expected the 2005 census will show a population of more than 12,215 inhabitants. The density in 2000 was equal to 0.9 inhabitants per mile2.
As for the State of Baja California Sur, in 2000 the population reached the 424,041 inhabitants. The density was 2.2 inhabitants per mile2. The proportion of the population, municipal in relation to the state, is 2.78 percent.
